Three quarks for Muster Mark! A rather arbitrary 126 years since idiomatic Irishman James Joyce was born, the Hammer's celebration reminds of his enduring imprint. One of Joyce's many artistic offspring was avant-garde composer John Cage, whose late-career Roaratorio: An Irish Circus on Finnegans Wake parades the influence of Joyce's stampeding stream-of-consciousness classic. Today, a rare video recording of Cage's intermedia piece screens while a short piano concert, a scholarly talk, and a reading complete the jaunt into the modernist's last nonce-gorged novel.
