Sergei Paradjanov's final film Ashik Kerib is a Rubik's Cube of color — although it's a whisper of his earlier, more complex films. The film concerns the titular Turkish minstrel, who takes a thousand-night expedition across Armenia, seeking wealth for his wedding — if his beloved, is, in fact, still waiting. The lush mise-en-scène is filled with regional touches, religious artifacts, and symbol-heavy objects, all of which add to a palpable sense of authenticity.
