Film The Happiness of the Katakuris (2001) and Visitor Q (2001)

The nuclear family is drizzled with dysfunction and served raw in this Takashi Miike double feature. Opening is The Happiness of the Katakuris — one of Miike's seven features from 2001 — an inverted reinvention of the musical in which a family of eccentrics runs an inn where visitors keep dying. Full of spontaneous ridicule and pop references, the absurd developments include buried guests becoming zombies, a British officer claiming relation to the Queen, and kitschy sing-alongs and merry danse macabres. The second serving is black comedy Visitor Q, where incest, murder, and necrophilia only hint at the Miike-made insanity within.
