Film Experimental Night: The Decay of Fiction (2002)

The Myron Hunt-designed Ambassador Hotel was an infamous Los Angeles landmark until its demolition two years ago. Tonight, the Versailles of Hollywood royalty is revisited in Pat O'Neill's rarely seen avant-garde film The Decay of Fiction. O'Neill's experiment superimposes classic footage and found sounds over the building's fetid remains, which still offer glints of its golden age. With a litany of cinematographic tricks, including moments of beautiful time lapse, Decay captures ghostly gangsters, politicians, and bellhops in an ethereal moment that hangs between what once was and what now is.
