Art KuKula: Dreamcatcher

For Dreamcatcher, KuKula's first solo showing at Thinkspace, the Israeli-born artist paints eerily charming images of little girl dolls, Disney-esque forest creatures, and blossoming flowers. Her figures fall somewhere near Mark Ryden in their Blythe-headed spookiness, but darn if her knife-wielding, cigarette-smoking, one-eyed squirrels don't also melt your heart. KuKula's sweet-faced girls look like they'd fit right in with The Nightmare Before Christmas, with their crudely stitched bodies and long, waving locks. But KuKula's world is more macabre than Tim Burton's, given her obsession with missing appendages and dripping blood.
