Art Christopher Chinn: On the Row

Upon graduating from art school and relocating to the city, local painter Christopher Chinn was struck by how intrepid artists would often share their Skid Row addresses with the very "undesirable elements" that made them affordable. Appropriately, he made that paradox the subject of his art. His emotionally charged portraits — characterized by thick paint, dramatic cropping, and unflinching realism — convey an indirectly political compassion. Eschewing grandstanding and charity, Chinn unearths his subjects' rough dignity by immortalizing them in art.
