The Afro-Peruvian sound known as Black Peru is among the richest, but most overlooked, subsets of South American music, drawing on Spanish, African, and Andean influences. It's distinguished by vocal acrobatics and a crafts museum's-worth of improvised percussion kits built from found materials, the latter made necessary by colonial rules banning drums. The expansive ensemble Perú Negro has been circling the globe since 1969 as the de facto cultural ambassador of this namesake tradition. Tonight, LA audiences finally get their marinera-inducing beats and grooves.
