Art Tony de los Reyes: Ahab's America

Los Angeles-based painter and sculptor Tony de los Reyes has more in common with 19th-century author Herman Melville than most politically savvy, academically trained artists. Keenly aware of the irony in his last few years' relentless obsession with Moby Dick, de los Reyes expands on the metaphorical implications of the novel's themes of obsession, consumption, violence, and heroism. Fortunately, this installation of haunting bronze sculptures, paintings (richly hued, emotionally fraught oceans of ink cleaved by intricately rendered sailing ships), and text-based pieces is long on artistry and short on whale science.
