Film Citizen Ruth (1996)

Before Juno was born, Citizen Ruth star Laura Dern delivered a messier issue: what happens when a full-grown, poverty-stricken, socially irresponsible American woman gets knocked up? A serious debate masquerading as screwball comedy, Citizen Ruth is remarkable for its standout, fall-down funny performances (witness Dern decked out with a spray-paint ring around her nose) and its treatment of the pro-life/pro-choice circus. Co-written by Sideways scribe Alexander Payne with Jim Taylor, the film stands up as well as it did when it was released 12 years ago.
