ART: ArchitectureElena Manferdini: Merletti

"Merletti" means lace in Italian; for architects, it refers to the pattern of folds along a watchtower's defensive rims and other secure rooftops. In Elena Manferdini's site-specific sculptural installation at the SCI-Arc gallery, the civil engineer/architect plays on the term's delicate yet impenetrable connotations. Suspended from the ceiling, her immense, woven scrim can be viewed from the catwalk above or the floor below.
