SCI-Arc says…

"Merletti" means lace in Italian; for architects, it refers to the pattern of folds along a watchtower's defensive rims and other secure rooftops. In Elena Manferdini's site-specific sculptural installation at the SCI-Arc gallery, the civil engineer/architect plays on the term's delicate yet impenetrable connotations. Suspended from the ceiling, her immense, woven scrim can be viewed from the catwalk above or the floor below. These vantage points expose the vertiginous manipulations of scale and the piece's multiple levels of detail.
