Art Mark Bradford: Help Us

Los Angeles painter, installation artist, and (most recently) video artist Mark Bradford has exhibited in some of the world's most prestigious galleries and museums, but he never forgets where he comes from. The South Central native maintains his studio in the old neighborhood and extends his political awareness outward, using his art to explore African-American life beyond LA. Like many, he was outraged by the tragedies of Katrina; a new rooftop installation atop Steve Turner Contemporary Gallery features a responsive painting that's viewable only from the air (or online at the gallery's 24/7 live streaming camera). Simply stating "Help Us," the roughly painted sign recalls the storm victims' own unforgettable hand-painted pleas.
