Puppet theatre is back with a vengeance, and Susan Simpson, director/designer/writer of Concrete Folk Variations, turns the genre on its little wooden head. In part one of her episodic series, Simpson introduces butch detective Loretta Salt, who investigates a murder in illicit, repressed, mid-20th century gay Los Angeles. Filled with delicate production design, Concrete Folk Variations is a dark journey into an artist's imaginary world — it just happens to be a noir tale starring a bunch of puppets.
