Art The Color of Life: Polychromy in Sculpture from Antiquity to the Present
-
- Charles-Henri-Joseph Cordier, Jewish Woman from Algiers, Courtesy Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
Looking at tony museum collections of ancient Greek and Roman statuary, one might think that the whole of antiquity existed only in tones of white and beige — but there's actually a venerable tradition of color in sculpture. This exhibition encompasses a lively survey of figurative sculptures, from ancient Greece to 16th-century Italy and 20th-century New York. Each of the several dozen pieces is a treasure in its own right; collectively, they demonstrate the unexpectedly rich and sophisticated use of color through the centuries. Highlights include an electrifying Duane Hanson installation and a lusciously formed anatomical model of a pregnant Venus from Italy's 18th century.
