Though Los Angeles is her stomping ground, provocative painter/sculptress Alison Saar is internationally acclaimed. Daughter of the groundbreaking Betye Saar, whose intensely symbolic mixed-media assemblages boldly commented on issues of gender and race, and sister of equally talented painter Lezley, Alison continues the focus on gender and her rich African and Caribbean ethnic make-up. Her latest work tackles the fraught topics of fertility and aging, through sumptuous life-sized sculptures and intimate works on paper exploring wry, surreal permutations of the female body.
