The beauty of Canadian-born, New York-based artist Cal Lane's work is in its remarkable juxtapositions. Lane transforms anything-but-delicate objects, such as dumpsters and shovels, into impossibly lacy, decorative sculptures using a plasma cutter. Her "industrial doilies" feminize traditionally masculine materials like industrial steel, stripping them of their intended function, while at the same time demonstrating the artist's wit, whimsy, and masterful control over machines.
