Music Box at the Fonda Theater says…

Southern Californian punk rock was invented on the day that Exene Cervenka, John Doe, D.J. Bonebrake, and Billy Zoom — collectively known as X — decided to form a band. In the three decades since the Doors' Ray Manzarek produced X's debut record, Los Angeles (whose anti-anthem title track continues to resonate with Angelenos plotting their escape), they've become synonymous with the city's sunny-schizo zeitgeist. Charismatic frontwoman Exene has left LA to explore St. Louis' allegedly fierce punk scene (after divorcing the then-penniless poet Viggo Mortensen) and embarked on her own successful visual-arts career. But after an epic set at SXSW, X proved that, even after 31 years, they can still show the kids how it's done.
