Music: Rock/Pop Xiu Xiu w/ Thao with the Get Down Stay Down

The Bay Area's avant-garde indie rockers Xiu Xiu take the stage in support of their sixth full-length, Women as Lovers, which the band has described as its most accessible release to date. Using an endlessly eclectic collection of sounds — from ear-piercing electronic noises to horns and bells to straightforward guitars and drums — Jamie Stewart and his revolving cast of bandmates have made abrasive, dissonant elements into beautiful, melodic pop songs. Stewart delivers his intimate lyrics in a gentle, wavering warble, while dealing with themes as diverse as the war in Iraq, love, and self-contempt. Opening up the night is Thao Nguyen's excellent indie-rock group, Thao with the Get Down Stay Down.
