Although director David Cronenberg's recent A History of Violence and Eastern Promises have been relatively accessible affairs, his first films were thought-provoking, techy gore-fests. The Steve Allen Theater hosts an eight-week retrospective of Cronenberg's earlier efforts, including tonight's kick-off selection, Dead Ringers. Jeremy Irons plays both Elliot and Beverly Mantle, a pair of identical twin gynecologists who become lost in sexual confusion, drugs, and insanity when a beautiful young actress with strange lady-bits enters the picture.
