Curator Ashley Emenegger went all the way to the unlikely art capital of Kansas City, Missouri, and brought back a little piece of the progressive heartland. Featured artists include painters Ricky Allman, David Ford, Anne Pearce, and Mary Ann Strandell; photographer Barry Anderson; and mixed-media artists Orly Cogan, Archie Scott Gobber, and Heather Smith Jones. Their mostly figurative work demonstrates a kind of sophistication, verve, and wit that's becoming less and less the exclusive province of posh coastal-city galleries, as the best regional schools and museums up the ante on contemporary art education and dissemination.
