For the newest installment of its Contemporary Documentaries series, the Academy screens a double feature — a pair of films profiling two of the brightest, most influential figures in modern rock music (John Lennon and Leonard Cohen), with vastly diverse results. The US vs John Lennon reads more like a political exposé, detailing the shadowy events surrounding the federal government's suspicions about (and covert aggression toward) the ex-Beatle and his family. Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man, meanwhile, traces the recent Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame inductee through five decades of alt-folk superstardom and personal/political upheaval using extensive footage from his original concerts and a few all-star tributes.
