Art Salomón Huerta: Mask

Salomón Huerta is one of LA's most popular painters — although personally, he seems somewhat reserved. His best-known works are smallish, finely detailed "portraits" of the backs of his subjects' heads and uncommunicative suburban landscapes that likewise keep their emotional distance. Comparatively, his new work takes a walk on the wild side. Ostensibly inspired by Daniel Chavira's photographic portraits of masked lucha libre wrestlers (now on diplay at Michael Kohn Gallery), Huerta's new paintings are florid, dynamic, and flashy — but with the masks firmly in place, his new subjects are no more intimate or familiar than his old ones.
