With a penchant for shimmering feedback and reverb-drenched arrangements, Film School are adherents to the late-'80s/early-'90s shoegaze tradition. Although some find the band's pitch-perfect homage to acts like the Swirlies and My Bloody Valentine overly academic, it is precisely its close study of the genre's beau ideal (and addition of dream-pop flourishes, such as string and keyboard lines) that makes the performances so transfixing. Onstage, the quintet's ethereal vocals, gossamer melodies, and furiously loud guitars coalesce into an indistinguishable swirl of sound that rivals Kevin Shields' most gorgeous rackets. Tonight, Film School return in continued support of their third album, 2007's Hideout.
