American Russian Theatre Ensemble Laboratory produces interdisciplinary events that illuminate Russia's darkly poetic, politically charged history. Now, ARTEL focuses on the legacy of Mikhail Bulgakov (1891-1940), who's best known for the exquisite satirical fantasy The Master and Margarita. ARTEL's latest production tells the story of Bulgakov's life with a litany of innovative, interactive performance devices that expand audiences' understanding of one of the most troubling, inspirational, and least-understood periods in modern literature — unearthing the lessons it holds for navigating today's world.
