Many art critics and scholars consider Jerome Witkin to be America's greatest living figurative painter. His portraits and landscapes combine an unerring eye for detail, expression, dissonance, and perspective with a sympathy for the human condition. From his large-scale paintings of the Holocaust and classically framed nudes to his Kerouac-and-Capote urban landscapes, Witkin is the standard-bearer for dynamic, progressive classicism. A new exhibition highlights his prolific drawing activity, with works on paper that function as both informal studies and self-contained masterpieces.
