Originally released in 1980 and often referred to as "the worst movie of all time," Michael Cimino's anti-Western epic Heaven's Gate was one hellish movie ride. Like Cleopatra before it, Heaven's Gate (a fictionalized foray into the Johnson County War) suffered an overblown budget that almost bankrupted its studio and killed the careers of its actors (Kris Kristofferson, Isabelle Huppert), and ultimately poisoned the response of critics and audiences when it finally washed up at the box office. Time, though, has been good to the drama: tonight's Director's Cut is actually considered a masterpiece in moviemaking. Check it out in its glorious (and controversial) entirety.
