In New Jersey-based artist Jon Rappleye's world, eyeless horned owls flit around a cluster of vultures, deer, and snakes while, in the distance, dozens of blue-and-white, iceberg-like formations jut from a chilly ocean. This mishmash of disparate climates and animals is at once reminiscent of eerie folk art and illustrations taken from children's fantasy books. Rappleye's signature look involves a pale whitewash in the foreground, where his land animals perch, juxtaposed with the rippling colors of a sunset in the background. Santa Monica's Richard Heller Gallery hosts Rappleye's work alongside that of Amy Mahnick, who utilizes lush textures and moods in her colorful oil-on-linen abstractions.
