A counterpoint to the often somber tone of Memorial Day weekend, the UCLA Jazz Reggae Festival offers the looming summer season's first chance to properly irie up. Sunday's "Jam" showcase features old-school rap antics and fiery political prose from the Roots, alongside the smooth R&B of Oakland soulstress Goapele, and the slicked-up county blues of Blue Note sensation Amos Lee. On Monday, the inimitable Stephen Marley cools things off in time for some laid-back Memorial Day BBQ — after dancehall heroes Capleton and Mr. Vegas fire up the pit, of course.
