French writer Jean Genet directed 1950's Un Chant D'Amour (A Song of Love) with the intent to distribute it only to Parisian gay-porn collectors, but accidentally made a cinematic masterpiece. The short film was banned in its homeland for explicit homosexuality, while earning ooh la las elsewhere from the likes of Andy Warhol and Todd Haynes. Shown tonight in all its restored raunch, the 25-minute silent flick depicts both a poetic and a pornographic side of sadomasochistic queer prison life. The screening also features an illuminating 1981 interview with Genet — who, remarkably, never saw the film publicly, due to a smoking ban in French theaters.
