With this series of works, Gary Palmer addresses one of the most ancient concerns in art: the representation of landscapes. Using sumi ink, Palmer has developed a gestural method for creating simple yet heavily abstracted paintings, forcing him to relinquish some control over the resulting image. He revels in the accidental nature of the resulting details, allowing viewers to associate his ink horizons with landscapes they have personally known. The paintings' openness to interpretation also suggests the possible existence of one essential landscape — one that is both rendered by the artist and perceived by his audience.
