Music: Rock/Pop The Warlocks

At this point, describing an indie-rock band as "Velvet Underground-inspired" is a bit like calling Catholicism "Jesus-referencing." But the Warlocks are asking for it, and not just because they share Lou Reed and co.'s original moniker. Their dirgey jams echo "Black Angel's Death Song" with a hushed "Stephanie Says" melancholy, oftentimes at the epic length of "Sister Ray." But with last year's Heavy Deavy Skull Lover, they continued to up their levels of shoegaze, krautrock, and even classic 4AD goth; every strand of hypno-psychedelia is fair game. So while the ingredients may seem familiar, the end result remains fantastically overwhelming.
