In his debut solo show, Japanese-born, California-bred artist Yoskay Yamamoto combines emotional expression with figures of timidity and doubt to illustrate his struggle with dualities. His paintings reflect a concern for the ancient, representing the battle between light and dark using traditional Japanese methods and patterns. At the same time, he demonstrates a passion for the contemporary American West Coast, infusing his images with pop-culture references. Yamamoto strikes a balance in this set of paintings, showing that darkness can, in fact, be uplifting.
