Pop music is putty in the hands of Matthew and Eleanor Friedberger (aka the Fiery Furnaces). Brother and sister pay no attention to traditional arrangements as they fashion a bricolage of catchy melodies in a host of time signatures, played on everything from analog synths and fuzzy guitars to orchestral tape loops and old pianos. The result is a wholly unique, schizophrenic subversion of the pop genre that's surprising in both brazenness and brilliance. (This is the band that handed over the vocal duties for an entire album to their octogenarian grandmother.) Joining the Furnaces are San Diego's garage rocking Grand Ole Party.
