From a town called Noid, just outside of Bath in the UK, comes a one-band mash-up of Jamie Lidell, Al Green, and Sly & the Family Stone, produced with the lo-fi grit of the Go! Team. Appropriately enough, they're known as the Heavy. The quintet's debut, Great Vengeance and Furious Fire, runs the tired "party-funk band" cliché through the garage-rock wringer, and injects a much-needed dose of dirt, sex, and swagger into the genre. No wonder Playboy's sponsoring a string of dates on its first US tour.
