Over four albums, Dawn McCarthy (aka Faun Fables) blends genres with the spectacular intimacy of theatre. The singer/songwriter plays drum, autoharp, and gamelan gongs in a neo-psych, folksy realm that's similar to Devendra Banhart. Collaborations span a bevy of indie-rock musicians like Nils Frykdal of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Will Oldham, and Noe Venable. McCarthy's live performances are the real spectacle, though, given her penchant for incorporating puppets and dance alongside her heady, moving compositions.
