Jazz great Louis Armstrong once said, "If you have to ask what jazz is, you'll never know." Those looking for enlightenment, big-band style, should hit the Hollywood Bowl for the Playboy Jazz Festival, headlined by Herbie Hancock, who recently won a Grammy award for his album River: The Joni Letters. While rumors of a surprise appearance from Mitchell herself are unfounded, there are plenty of other giants worth seeing in person: Al Jarreau, Keb' Mo', the Roy Hargrove Big Band, Oscar Castro-Neves, master of ceremonies Bill Cosby, and jazz legends Tower of Power, whose new lead man, Larry Braggs, is "the best singer we've had since the '70s," according to the band.
