d.e.n. contemporary art says…

A single definition of Indian contemporary art is tricky to pin down, as one might expect when funneling the widely varying creative output from any country with 1.13 billion people. Still, the d.e.n. Contemporary Art Museum and Western Project in Culver City team up to explore the subcontinent's blossoming contemporary art scene in Contradictions & Complexities: Contemporary Art from India. The show includes the work of six artists that create everything from stark black-and-white photographs (Sheba Chhachhi) to colorful geometric textures (Shobha Broota), and just about everything in between. Much of the art touches upon the nation's constant economic and class struggle, while celebrating the rich, kaleidoscopic palette of colors often associated with the Indian aesthetic. Artists Anita Dube, Chitra Ganesh, Mithu Sen, and Santana Gohain also show.
