The first stateside exhibit of French/South African/Dutch artist Marlene Dumas' work, Measuring Your Own Grave is a prodding collection of sketches and paintings that explore themes of identity, sexuality, death, life, and the body — particularly how it's affected by pregnancy and birth. Moving like a bullet train through the dark recesses of humanity, the collection is sequenced in nonchronological order, creating synergy between opposing ideas and addressing the human quest for meaning in a world whose events can seem arbitrary. Dumas' painstakingly imprecise strokes require viewers to engage with the work and define its worth, and it is this interactivity that elevates the show into a singular, stirring masterpiece.
