The Mint is one of LA's most resilient rock venues, relentlessly challenging notions of indie slickness with its bookers' penchant for gritty alt-folk and urban freedom rock. Tonight's bill features a trio of hale 'n hearty troubadours and an opening band, the Hellen Back Quartet, that stands garage rock's straightforward good-time vibe on its ear. The Quartet's hard-driving, bluesy, occasionally punky anthems feature the unpredictable Ms. Back, a frontwoman with a ribald sense of humor and a glass of scotch permanently in hand. Her mind-blowingly inappropriate narration could drive you to drink, too.
