Seattle-based Grand Archives use quietly strummed guitar, horns, piano, and whistlin' lips to lay down melodies that are equal parts folk, country, and rock 'n roll. Former Band of Horses singer Mat Brooke's voice elicits comparisons to "Teach Your Children"-era Crosby, Stills & Nash on tracks like "A Setting Sun." But a more fitting (and more contemporary) touchstone is the jangly, slightly fractured pop of the Shins. Brooke delivers compelling lyrics in a near-whisper, proving that well-considered lines don't have to be screamed in order to move listeners.
