The title of this two-person exhibition refers to the artists' different approaches to dependence on media and consumerism. For collagist Sophia Allison, the "automatic" is her raccoon-like scavenging for consumer products, which she rips, cuts, and otherwise destroys to create enigmatic mixed-media pieces. Painter York Chang's surreal works are inherently enigmatic. The "automatic" aspect of his politically and socially charged art is the mechanical, nearly maniacal layering and over-painting of images on the canvas, repeated until he achieves his own eerie sense of perfection.
