Richard Heller Gallery says…

Living in Sweden proved to be an invaluable influence on Victoria Reynolds' artwork. Not only does she emulate the painstakingly naturalistic vanitas (often-morbid still-life paintings representing the meaninglessness of life) of old Northern European masters, but her subject matter — reindeer flesh — is inspired by the Lapland village's dependence on the mammal. Attending reindeer slaughters and observing the way the people of the area honor and use the animals (much like Native Americans do with the buffalo) has informed the painter's renderings of their flesh and organs — as lush and lovely as fresh, unfolding flora.
