In traditional French country cuisine, an ortolan is a tiny bird that's force-fed, drowned alive in Armagnac, roasted, and finally eaten whole while the diner hides beneath a napkin. This garish practice inspired the name of the Deadly Syndrome's critically acclaimed debut, The Ortolan, released last year. Despite the morbid appellation and a fascination with ghosts, however, the band makes catchy, polished indie rock reminiscent of Wolf Parade and the National — and it has taken the LA scene by storm since forming in 2006. Joining the quartet for tonight's free show at the Hammer are the husband/wife-fronted outfit Miss Derringer. – Joe Blankholm
