While Mike Stilkey's fanciful-yet-edgy works draw comparisons to Egon Schiele, Modigliani, and Aubrey Beardsley, their contemporary illustrative twists give the Los Angeles artist's output real originality. Stilkey has an appreciation for the past, as evidenced by his formally dressed, glossy-eyed subjects — top-hatted men and red-lipped women with pin curls. Painted over stacks of discarded vintage books, the pieces are transformed into three-dimensional sculptures; but Stilkey doesn't deface his antique finds — rather, he brings them to life by recognizing their place in history while inventing a new one for them in his own whimsical present.
