The risk-taking John Lautner is often described as an architect's architect, even though some of his designs brought him both criticism and disdain. One of his early projects, Googie's Coffee Shop on the Sunset Strip, was blamed for launching the oft-imitated space-inspired architecture fad of the 1950s. And yet, Lautner is known for much more than Googie's, as evidenced by the residences he built in LA, Palm Springs, and Mexico — particularly his "Chemosphere" house in Los Angeles, which hovers over a canyon on a single support beam. The Hammer Museum salutes Lautner's legacy with the first major survey of his work, including models, sketches, and short films.
