Art (Neo) Realism

Just like the A.O.S. song says, history repeats itself. The new exhibition at George Billis Gallery offers a refreshing take on mid-19th-century realism, as an eclectic group of figurative painters — including Terry Thompson, Derek Buckner, and Jorge Santos — re-interprets the aesthetic movement with a contemporary sensibility. Sharp lines, energetic brushwork, compelling palettes, systematic curves, and perfectly recreated cultural symbols evoke a strange sense of hope — a strength and rebirth coming from the varied readings of a historical moment.
