While often lumped into the category of "stoner rock," the sounds created by bands like Earth, Sleep, Comets on Fire, and Kyuss have also been pegged as examples of "desert rock," "sludge," and "doom metal." The documentary Such Hawks, Such Hounds tracks the emergence of this slow-burning style of music and features interviews with members of Black Sabbath, Kyuss, and Nebula, among others. The movie screens as part of filmmaker Allison Anders' Don't Knock the Rock Film and Music Festival, which takes place every Thursday through August. Music at the screening comes from DJ Tony "Tee Pee" Presedo and San Diego band Earthless, who play after a Q&A with the filmmakers.
