Film Gaslight (1944)
-
- Gaslight
Though French-born actor Charles Boyer isn't often mentioned alongside classic movie stars like Cary Grant or Humphrey Bogart, he shared the screen with many of the biggest stars of Hollywood's Golden Age. A matinee idol in France by the mid-'30s, he became a star across the pond after playing leading man to screen goddesses like Greta Garbo. The London-set Gaslight brings Ingrid Bergman and Boyer together in a Victorian thriller about an evil husband trying to drive his wife insane. The film was nominated for seven Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Actress (which Bergman won). Around the same time, its title became a verb meaning to mess with someone's head.
