Though they rock a serious set of horns, an in-the-pocket rhythm section, and an old-school organ, 11-piece Afro-soul orchestra Budos Band were only born in Staten Island relatively recently. Since signing to funkster label Daptone Records, they've never failed to please Fela Kuti fans: their concise, throwback instrumental masterpieces closely mimic the master in his heyday. Repping local nabes, Echo Park jam band Fool's Gold mash up African highlife, Cali pop beats, and exotic Hebrew lyrics, while j.Sole's Musaics unleash a tribal dance force, and I&I Sound round out the evening with dub-filled irie.
