The work of New Zealander Rozi Demant depicts feathered friends, but her birds don't always stand for things like freedom, peace, and beauty. Demant's utterly unique paintings are characterized by glamorous callipygian nudes, captive avian flocks, bloody images of sexual dominance, and the emotionally fraught — yet whimsical — lighting and landscapes associated with fairy tales. Her most mannerist anatomical tell, at least in this series, is the spindly, balletic elongation of her sirens' legs; an unsettling, haunting gesture that underscores the mythological quality of her scenes.
