In the early aughts, Pittsburgh scuzz-fuzz trio Modey Lemon were easy to lump in with a gaggle of garage revivalists. Nowadays, with their contemporaries aping new wave, recruiting Pharrell Williams, and generally running around in circles, Modey Lemon have emerged unscathed — not by re-inventing themselves, but by refining their shrieking blooze-punk. On Season of Sweets, Phil Boyd pushes his Spiritualized-style distorted riffs further into deep space, while the rhythm section stays locked on terra firma, with Jason Kirker and Paul Quattrone sounding like Animal from The Muppet Show jamming out with Geezer Butler. Check out "It Made You Dumb," a sunny scorcher with hooks and melody to spare. – Stephen Gossett
